Kerala has a way of making stillness feel luxurious. Five stays where the backwaters, the forest and a great deal of quiet do all the work.
There is a particular kind of luxury that Kerala has quietly cornered, and it has nothing to do with marble lobbies. It is the luxury of slowing down. The backwaters take everything at their own unbothered pace — a houseboat drifting past palm-lined canals, the light going soft and gold over Vembanad by four in the afternoon. You stop checking your phone not because there’s no signal, but because there’s suddenly nothing you’d rather be doing than watching the water.
So we did the pleasant work of deciding where we’d actually want to wake up. Here’s the shortlist.
The Postcard Mandalay Hall
Mattancherry, Fort Kochi
Before the backwaters, a night in the city. Set in a lovingly restored 200-year-old building on Synagogue Lane, Mandalay Hall has just five rooms — each one a “gallery” hung with a different artist’s work, some with deep soaking tubs. Step outside into the spice markets, antique shops and art walks of Fort Kochi; come back to a small pool and a kitchen guests rave about.

Coconut Lagoon
Kumarakom, on Lake Vembanad
Reachable only by boat, this CGH Earth property is built almost entirely from old Keralan tharavadu homes, taken apart and rebuilt here so it feels less like a resort and more like a village that has always been. Run with a real eye on the ecosystem around it. Days are for a butterfly garden, an Ayurveda treatment, a sunset cruise — the backwaters distilled.
Kumarakom Lake Resort
Kumarakom, on Lake Vembanad
A little grander, and unapologetic about it. Across 25 acres on Vembanad, its meandering pool villas let you roll out of bed straight into the water, while the heritage villas — rebuilt from centuries-old manas — come with private plunge pools and open-roofed bathrooms. The infinity pool spilling toward the lake is the spot to be at sunset.
Quietly collects awards, and doesn’t need to mention them.
Chembarathi Boutique Resort
Vythiri, Wayanad
Trade the water for the trees. The outlier here — a tiny hillside hideaway in the green folds of Wayanad, forest pressing in on two sides, streams that wake up in the monsoon, a waterfall across the valley. The architecture all but disappears into the woods, leaving you with rain, rustling trees and the odd owl at night. The closest thing to a proper disconnect Kerala offers.
Purity at Lake Vembanad
Muhamma, near Alleppey
An Indo-Italian villa — white stucco, red terracotta — refined by Malabar Escapes into their Relais & Châteaux collection, on the widest stretch of Vembanad. Every room faces the lake. There’s a lakeside pool, an art collection worth slowing down for, an Ayurveda spa, and candlelit dinners at the water’s edge. You arrive by boat, which is exactly the point.
Less a hotel, more the home of someone with wonderful taste.
